Kamran Akmal may well be the most emphatic proof of cricket's changed priorities post Adam Gilchrist. Sides now search for an explosive batsman who can change a day, an innings, a phase with the bat and so long as you can identify right wicketkeeping glove from left, the place is yours.There has been little doubt about Akmal's batting. The purity of his drives and the strength of his cutting and pulling, particularly on slower subcontinent surfaces, has always held a strong allure. And when it comes together as it did one January morning in Karachi against India - one of the Test innings of that decade - he makes it in the side as a batsman alone.

But his glovework, which began so promisingly when he effectively ended the dogfight between Rashid Latif and Moin Khan in late 2004, has deteriorated alarmingly and few Pakistan matches are complete without a clumsy Akmal error. It wasn't always thus, for he was good when he began, good enough to impress Ian Healy. But non-stop cricket in all three formats have let technical errors creep in and critics and experts have long pushed for the need for him to take a break.To quality spin, he is often as lost as the batsmen and Danish Kaneria, over the years, has suffered in particular. In a string of error-ridden performances, the one nobody will forget will be the four dropped catches (and a missed run-out) in the Sydney Test of 2009-10, which allowed Australia to escape with a remarkable, traumatic win. Against this the memory of his Karachi hundred will always battle, with no clear winner ever likely to emerge. The tryst with controversy does his cause no good, with his refusal to accept his demotion from the side in the aftermath of a disastrous Sydney Test in 2009, eliciting a harsh fine and a disciplinary probation from the PCB.

Born in Karachi on September 6th 1968, the Pakistan Captain Saeed Anwar has become one of the best batsmen in the world through hard work, dedication combined with his exceptional talent. He has a tremendous eye, excellent timing, and makes use of his wrists better that any other batsmen in the game. He can find the gaps at will, and more often that not, a little push from Saeed simply races away to the boundry. Strong on all sides of the wicket, Saeed's favorite shot is the cut shot, which he plays better than any other Pakistani batsmen.

Very strong on the off side, Saeed has the ability to play some glorious cover drives that are an absolute delight to watch. His off side shots are so good, that he is considered to be the best off side player, among left handed batsmen in the world.

The reason for his immaculate off side play is because of his sound technique. He is solid in defence, yet can destroy any bowling attack in the world in a matter of minutes. His strength in timing and the ability to play on the rise, combined with excellent execution, makes him the best opener to ever come from Pakistan...far ahead of the likes of Soahil,Raja,and the Mohammad brothers.

As a first class cricketer, Saeed used to bat in the middle order however once he made his ODI debut in Australia, he was thrust into the opener's role. He began opening the innings in domestic
cricket, and made his way back into the ODI side as a specialist opener. Despite, having lost out on precious years due to politics in the PCB, Saeed never lost hope. He made most of the limited
opportunity's that Imran Khan gave him, yet he was over looked for the likes of Shoaib Mohammad and Ramiz Raja...players who never performed outside of Pakistan.

In 1993, Saeed created a new world record..he hit three back to back ODI hundreds in Sharjah, a feat never before achieved by any Pakistani player. He was now finally a permanant member of the ODI side, under Wasim Akram. However, he was still not considered for a test spot..once again a huge error by the selectors.

In 1994 however, Saeed finally got a chance to show his worth as a test match plater. He hit a mammoth 169 in New Zealand and combined it with some important half centuries in the rest of the series. He had now proven his credentials as a solid test match player with the temperment and ability to succeed at the level.

Since 1994, Saeed has played another 40 odd test matches, scored over 3500 runs and averages 47.20. He is simply a brilliant player. He is also the Captain of the Pakistan team. He has the ability to
lead from the front and become an excellent Captain, as time will tell.

Saeed is an excellent team man and gets along extremely well with his team mates, who have nothing but praise for him..as well as fans
and press alike. Saeed is also a Computer Engineer, and his wife Lubna, is a doctor who takes care of him when he gets his regular dose of flu.

Imran Nazir is a Pakistani right handed batsman in cricket who represented the Pakistan national cricket team in Test cricket, One Day International and Twenty20 cricket matches.

Career

Nazir made his debut in Test cricket on March 1999, against Sri Lanka at Lahore in Pakistan and a few days later, he made his One Day International debut against the same opposition at Visakhapatnam in India. He played in 8 Test matches between 1999–2002 and secured a spot in the Pakistan squad since 2002. He also played in One Day International arena, but he could never cement his place in the squad. The emergence of several Pakistan opening batsmen such as Mohammad Hafeez, Yasir Hameed, Taufeeq Umar and Salman Butt kept him out of the national side. However he displayed excellent cricketing performances in First class cricket.

Nazir made his return to the national team in the second One Day International against South Africa in February 2007 during Pakistan's tour of South Africa. He impressed the Pakistan national selectors with his innings of 57 runs from just 39 deliveries, though he struggled to score runs during the rest of the tournament.

Nazir was named in Pakistan's squad for the 2007 World Cup. He scored 160 runs against Zimbabwe in Pakistan's last match during the 2007 Cricket World Cup, after being knocked out by Ireland.

It was the second highest score by a Pakistani batsman and the eighth highest score by any batsman in World Cup history and his 8 sixes equaled the World Cup record of Australian batsman, Ricky Ponting. It was also the highest runs he scored in List A cricket. He now remains a regular member of Pakistan's Twenty20 squads.

In 2008, Nazir signed for the Indian Cricket League and played for the Lahore Badshahs. He scored 111 runs not out, off just 44 deliveries, against the Hyderabad Heroes in the third of the best of three finals of the tournament and helped his team to victory. After signing up for the Indian Cricket League, his chances of ever playing again for Pakistan looked slim. However, on 2 February 2009, a Pakistani court suspended the ban on Indian Cricket League players, which paved the way for Nazir to make a return to the One Day International and Twenty20 squad during their tour of Sri Lanka in August 2009. He was given another chance against New Zealand int two T20I's held in Dubai which Pakistan won 2-0. Next time, he was given a chance against Australia in only T20I in Australia but could not bat much. He showed the same form against England in February 2010 in two T2OI's and was consequently dropped from the Pakistani side. Since then, he has played two National T20 cups and shown really bad form. He was selected for the Hong Kong Sixes tournament 2010 in Hong Kong as a member of Pakistani squad. There again, he showed very bad form but worst of all, in the final which was inevitably in Pakistan's favor was lost due Imran Nazir's bowling. 46 was required from the last 8-ball over but Imran Nazir gave away 48 runs in 7 balls.

In Twenty20 games he has an extraordinary bowling average of 1.00 and in his 8 deliveries he has 3 wickets a strike rate of less than 3. He has also played for Dhaka Dynamites in Bangladesh's NCL T20 Bangladesh.

He made his Test debut for Pakistan against Australia in the first Test at Lord's in July 2010. Azhar is one of the few Pakistani cricketers (after the introduction of ODI) to play a test before ODI.

He is a right-hand batsman and an occasional leg-break bowler who has played for Lahore, Lahore Blues, Lahore Whites, Abbottabad, Khan Research Laboratories, Punjab and Huntly (Scotland) during his career.[2]

Following the exclusion of middle-order stalwarts Younus Khan and Mohammad Yousuf from the Pakistani team in 2010, Ali was drafted into the lineup for the Test series against Australia and England in July 2010. He made his debut against Australia in July, along with Umar Amin; Azhar scored 17 runs in his debut innings before he was caught behind by Tim Paine. In the second innings, he scored 42 as Pakistan lost the match by 150 runs.[3] In the second Test match against Australia, he scored 30 runs in the first innings, followed by his maiden half century in the second as Pakistan recorded their first Test victory over the Australians in fifteen years.[4] He struggled in the first two Tests against England, recording a 32-ball duck during a the second match as Pakistan were bundled out for 72. Following these disastrous collapses Mohammad Yousuf was recalled to the squad and Amin lost his place, but Azhar was given another opportunity and found his feet in the third Test, scoring an unbeaten 92.

Ali retained his place in the Test squad for the series against South Africa in November. He scored half centuries in both innings of the first Test, and helped Pakistan, chasing an improbable 451, avoid defeat with a crucial fourth-innings partnership with the returning Younus Khan. He top-scored with 90 in the first innings of the second Test, before producing another solid performance alongside captain Misbah-ul-Haq in the second innings, finishing unbeaten after facing 135 deliveries to secure another draw.

Following consistent performances against South Africa backed up with experience against England and Australia the selectors picked Ali for the two-match test series against New Zealand in January 2011, also young Pakistan batsman Asad Shafiq was given a place alongside Ali. [5] In the first innings of the first match Ali only managed 18 and wasn't required to bat in the following innings as Pakistan won by 10-wickets. During the second match of the series Azhar was on 62* at Stumps registering his sixth half-century in the process

Ahmed Shehzad aims to be an aggressive batsman like Ricky Ponting, and he is well on his way if his top-order performances for Pakistan Under-19s are any indication. Shehzad made his first-class debut in January 2007, just two months after his 15th birthday, and has since established himself as an opening batsman for the U-19 team. His 167 in the same year helped Pakistan chase down a stiff 342 in the first Youth Test against England in Derby. He backed that up with impressive performances at home, scoring 315 runs – with a highest of 105 – as Australia Under-19s were thrashed 5-0. Another century followed in the Youth Test against Bangladesh, and he carried that form into the triangular tournament in Sri Lanka in 2008, which Pakistan won. He made it to the Pakistan Test squad for the home series against Sri Lanka the following year despite not being in the probables. A century in the tour game against the visitors changed his fortunes. He returned to the Under-19 circuit to represent Pakistan in the World Cup in New Zealand.

Taufeeq Umar (Urdu: توفیق عمر) (born 20 June 1981 in Lahore) is a Pakistani cricketer who was a regular Test opening batsman for three seasons, before being dropped ahead of the 2004–05 season. Unusually for a Pakistani player, Umar has played more Tests than ODIs, as he was not given a prolonged run in the ODI side until 2003, when he played eight ODIs in a row. However, he only missed two of 24 Tests played between August 2001 and April 2004, and after 17 Tests his batting average had reached 48.03 after he made four scores above 50 in the two-Test series with South Africa [2]. Possessing excellent temperament, he remains unique amongst Pakistani openers in his ability to concentrate for long periods and his ability to build innings. With exquisite drives either side of the wicket, a formidable cut and pull shot in the armory and possessing the natural gift of timing, he seemed the very answer to Pakistan's opening problem especially against a full strength South African attack in South Africa (2003). A loss of form against India (2004) resulted in Taufeeq losing his place in the team and a subsequent loss of batting confidence. He continued to be in the Pakistani selectors' minds, playing for Pakistan against a touring England XI in 2005–06 [3], and continued to play for Lahore Ravi and Habib Bank Limited in Pakistani domestic competitions. It remains to be seen whether he can recover his solid technique and return to Test cricket as the formidable opener he was meant to be. This is compounded by the fact that he joined the rebel Indian Cricket League and represented the Lahore Badshahs. Taufeeq will be spending a summer in the UK playing Professional League cricket for Lancaster Cricket Club in the Northern League.
